Strengthening Skål Connections in Berlin

Our President, Johan van Schalkwyk, met with Skål International Berlin at the South African Embassy in Berlin – Germany – for a round table organised by our German counterparts together with the Embassy team.

The session was an opportunity to exchange business ideas, share updates on South African travel and tourism, and further strengthen relations between Germany and South Africa – and between Cape Town and Berlin.

The meeting was attended by members of all representing bodies, including Skål International Berlin Vice President Dr. Wolfgang Streitbörger and Skål International Director Toni Ritter, alongside the South African Embassy team.

The Embassy itself carries a remarkable history. The land was purchased in the 1930s – long before World War II – and the building later became the first Embassy commissioned by the South African government in our democracy.

A behind-the-scenes tour revealed unique details: much of the material was shipped from South Africa. Other proudly South African stories are told via the handrails, doors, façade panels, and the striking sunrise sandstone floors (brought from Polokwane)

This gathering not only celebrated the spirit of “doing business among friends” but also marked another step in bringing Skål International Cape Town and the international network closer together – while building bridges with the German tourism sector.

A warm thank you to the South African Embassy team in Berlin and our friends at Skål International Berlin for their hospitality and commitment to collaboration.
