FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

Dear Skålleagues, esteemed members, and tourism friends,

As we look to March, I am delighted to reflect on a remarkable February that brought us together in celebration of Cape Town’s global standing, while also highlighting the vital role that democracy and tourism play in shaping our industry.

February Business Lunch: A Celebration of Democracy and Tourism

Our 11 February Business Lunch at the Fountains Hotel was a truly special occasion. While enjoying industry updates and fellowship, we took time to acknowledge the historic significance of this date in South Africa’s journey towards democracy. 35 years have passed since Nelson Mandela’s release from Victor Verster Prison – an event that not only opened our country to the world but also provided the freedoms upon which our thriving tourism industry is built.

We were honoured to welcome Christo Brand, formerly Mr Mandela’s prison warden and now a tourism entrepreneur and author. His reflections on transformation, legacy, and the importance of storytelling reminded us that tourism is far more than a commercial enterprise: it is a vehicle for unity, education, and collective progress.

A Heartfelt Condolence: Remembering Niel Els

Regrettably, 11 February will also hold another deeply personal meaning for Skål members. On that same afternoon – unbeknownst to us all – it was the final time we would share stories and camaraderie with Niel Els. Later in the evening, we received the heartbreaking news of Niel’s sudden passing. Shockwaves of sorrow travelled quickly across the global tourism community as we grappled with this loss.

To Niel’s family, friends, and Skålleagues everywhere, we extend our sincerest condolences. Although the sadness is immeasurable, there is comfort in knowing Niel spent his final hours in the company he cherished – his Skål family.

Niel was a true ambassador of tourism, a connector of people, and a citizen of the world. He served on various tourism and Skål International committees, creating friendships that spanned continents.

Cape Town on the Global Stage

Our city continues to draw international acclaim, with UK accolades and recognition including:

The Post Office Travel Money Holiday Report listing Cape Town as the Best Value Long-Haul Destination. Wanderlust Reader Awards recognising South Africa as the Most Desirable Destination. Food and Travel Magazine designating South Africa as the Long-Haul Destination of the Year. The Gary Barlow Wine Tour television series reaching an audience of 500,000 viewers per episode in the UK, shining a spotlight on our renowned Cape Winelands.

These achievements come with significant responsibility. As Cape Town Skålleagues, we must continue promoting our city with integrity and excellence, ensuring that visitors experience the very best Cape Town has to offer.

A Month of Engagement and Growth

February proved to be a busy and exciting month:

I had the privilege of attending the Skål gathering at Meetings Africa in Sandton on 25 February. This event was an essential platform for connecting with industry friends across our region, strengthening both our shared goals and Skål’s influence in African tourism.

A major milestone for our local industry was the arrival of the first group of Chinese travellers under the Trusted Tour Operator initiative. Our Past President and Committee Member for Strategic Projects, Dawn Smith, helped welcome these visitors at Cape Town International Airport – an important step in deepening our ties with this vital market.

Upcoming Engagements:

ITB Berlin (5 March 2025): I am looking forward to representing Skål International Cape Town at ITB Berlin and attending the Skål evening there, where I will meet with global members to promote our city’s diverse offerings and build further international connections.

WTM Africa Skål Evening (10 April 2025): We are elated to welcome the Skål International World President, Denise Scrafton, as our special guest. This will be an excellent opportunity for members to network with industry leaders and champion the spirit of “doing business among friends.”

Skål International Cape Town Travel Trade Marketplace (12 November 2025): Our newly rebranded annual B2B event at Lagoon Beach Hotel will focus on immersive networking, sponsor showcases, and meaningful industry collaboration.

Welcoming New and Long-Standing Members

February also saw us extend a warm welcome to new members joining our Cape Town family:

Left to Right: Skål Cape Town President Johan Van Schalkwyk, Zaid Adams (Boschendal), Rachel Nicholsen (Chefs Warehouse), Richard Smith (Gateway Maps) & Henry James-Pietersen (Cape Town Tourism).

During our lunch, we had the opportunity to recite the Skål Oath to remind ourselves of the values that guide us: friendship, loyalty, and support. We also celebrated a loyal, long-serving member – Colleen Rens, who received her Gold Badge in recognition of her many years of dedicated membership.
