In true leisure style – as one would expect from two great port cities – Skål International Hamburg and Skål International Cape Town have rekindled their longstanding international friendship.
Skål International Hamburg President Hubert Neubacher welcomed our Cape Town President, Johan van Schalkwyk – joined by fellow Cape Town member Preston Pietersen – together with Hamburg members for a memorable morning harbour cruise of Hamburg.
The original twinning agreement between Cape Town and Hamburg was signed on 2 November 2009 (certificate number 30). Today, on 4 September 2025 – more than 15 years later – this special relationship was proudly renewed with certificate number 46.
The occasion was hosted by Barkassen-Meyer, a longstanding Skål Hamburg member business and one of the city’s iconic harbour tour operators, showcasing the most beautiful and fascinating sights of the Port of Hamburg on their uniquely Hamburg art boats.
Over the years, both clubs and both cities have transformed, yet the spirit of international tourism values, shared business opportunities, and lasting friendship remains unchanged. Today’s renewal brings Cape Town and Hamburg – and South Africa and Germany – closer together, inspiring us to continue promoting our cities and truly doing business among friends.
