June 2022 Newsletter

NEWSLETTER: JUNE 2022

To all the members of the Best Club in The World,

Thank you to everyone who attended the lunch at Karibu – it was a fabulous bitter-sweet event, with both James Vos and Enver Duminy in attendance – and that speaks to my intro: The Best Club Ever.

There was a comment from a guest that attended the May lunch, tongue in check, but nonetheless worth a mention to make a salient point. “Why are there often politicians at the Cape Town Club events?

My response was instant, from the heart and factual: Because we have worked hard to enable them to recognise the value of Skål as a Tourism organisation and an important body within the sector globally. AND we have politicians as guests and invited speakers BECAUSE we have NO politics within our club – and that’s how we will always roll!

In the words of Enver Duminy, we need to celebrate and utilize every accolade that is bestowed upon us. So on that note:

“Cape Town International Airport has once again scooped the coveted 2022 Best Airport in Africa award. This is the 7th consecutive year that the airport reigns supreme in the Skytrax World Airport Awards. In May, international arrivals reported recovery of 70% and 82% for domestic arrivals when compared to the same period in 2019.”

Also this year, Cape Town is up for:

  1. Africa’s Leading Beach Destination 2022
  2. Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination 2022
  3. Africa’s Leading City Destination 2022
  4. Africa’s Leading Festival & Event Destination 2022
  5. Africa’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2022
  6. Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2022: Table Mountain, South Africa

There are quite a few Cape Town properties on the list including Skål Cape Town and other Club members. It is to everyone’s benefit if the Mother City wins as many spots as possible.

It certainly has been an emotional past couple of weeks for our Club having lost two of our members: Keon Daniels and Rory Goldhill. Both way too soon and way too young.

One thing I can emphatically say – you knew when either one of them was in the room. They both had personalities larger than life, were dedicated Skålleagues and very active members of our industry.

They will be missed at every single lunch and event. There are no words to describe our loss. As Skål Cape Town we have assisted both families in respect of their individual needs.

The invitation to the July lunch has been posted on our social media pages and more info is mentioned below. CLICK HERE to read more and RSVP. As always would be wonderful to have as many members as possible together again.

There are minimal tables left for the Annual Skål Cape Town Workshop – please click here to make contact with Carol Bayne to ensure your participation in this very worthwhile Tourism networking event. She is however globe-trotting at the moment so please be patient – Carol will reply in due course.

Our Club is also assisting Shirley Brown and Vernon Kirsten – who are at the forefront of establishing The Skål Cape West Coast Club. Their first membership drive is on the 14th July 2022 at the Fossil Park. Fiona Angelico, our ISC and I will be attending their event. We wish them all the best knowing that it’s going to be a huge success.

The International Skål Congress is in Croatia in October for those members that are interested in attending. I can honestly say that being part of a World Congress is an experience of a lifetime. Once you’ve been to a Congress you really have a greater understanding of the true friendship within our Fabulous organisation.

One of the aspects of the Congress is the International Sustainable Tourism Awards – geared towards enhancing the visibility and grant recognition to entities from the Travel and Tourism industry.

I am thrilled to say that we have entered two Cape Town entities:

  • Groot Constantia Wine Estate, and
  • Cape Camino

On closing from me Folks, make contact, check in with the people you love, you know, you like. Often and at ridiculous random times, whenever you get the opportunity hug the ones you love and like, tell your Tribe whenever you feel it that you Love them.

Tell them so often that they cannot but remember it!

I wish you all Immense HAPPINESS

Incredible GOOD HEALTH

Amazing FRIENDSHIPS

And abundant LONG LIFE!

THANK YOU TO OUR SKÅL INTERNATIONAL TOAST WINE SPONSOR:

July Guest Speaker

At ouR July 2022 networking lunch hosted at the Milnerton Golf Club, we will hear from our member and industry professional – Lee Botti.

Lee Botti trained as a primary school teacher after doing her schooling in Cape Town. She taught for 6 years in Cape Town, Sydney and Edenvale.

She started the recruitment company 45 years ago. After a few years it had grown substantially and it became a full time job: recruiting for the travel and shipping industries. Branches were  opened in Durban and Cape Town.

Ithuba was initially started by her daughter Sabina, bringing students and teachers to their boardroom. After a while, the company negotiated with the Iziko Maritime Museum in the V&A Waterfront to use their premises twice a month.

They have trained 10 000 Grade 12 and Grade 11  students in the last 10 years.

Currently classes are held at the Iziko Museum in the Gardens and the students are given a tour of the museum after the session.

We look forward to hearing from Lee Botti on the 13th of July about this ongoing skills  upliftment project.

However, #LatinAmerica has led the #industry in terms of passenger demand, and our own #recovery has evolved at a faster pace than initially projected. We now expect to be at pre pandemic seat capacity levels in the second half of 2022 and reach 2019 passenger numbers by the end of the year.”
